ASIRT is a leading U.S.-based international road safety organization dedicated to improving global road safety through education and advocacy. Working under the premise that road crashes are predictable and preventable, ASIRT’s mission is to save lives and minimize crash-related injuries by informing travelers, enabling them to make safe travel choices, and by creating and supporting sustainable road safety programs and partnerships worldwide. ASIRT works with governments in the U.S. and abroad, corporations, the education abroad community and NGOs to help reduce road crash injuries and deaths and the associated social and economic impacts.
ASIRT believes that government plays a crucial role in global road safety in terms of policy, enforcement and infrastructure. While the road safety situation in the United States is comparatively impressive, American travelers remain especially vulnerable to global road safety conditions. ASIRT therefore encourages the U.S. government to make improving global road safety a priority, as well as to maintain the position of the U.S. as a road safety model. In this regard, ASIRT is working with Congress, Department of State and Department of Transportation to help raise awareness about global road safety.

ASIRT is a leader in the global road safety community, informing and cooperating with the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations (UN) and the World Bank, as well as multi-national corporations and governments. ASIRT is active in forums throughout the world, where participants meet to share best practices and consult on new initiatives and policies in the context of global road safety.
ASIRT works with U.S. embassies and businesses in focus countries, partnering with local non-governmental organizations, to develop sustainable locally-based road safety initiatives. ASIRT creates, develops and mentors road safety NGOs and partnerships, working in individual countries and on a regional level. ASIRT works primarily in Turkey and Kenya, although other target countries include Egypt, Israel, Vietnam, Jordan, Nigeria, Russia, Ghana and Uganda.
ASIRT is working as one of six partners in the new Bloomberg Global Road Safety Initiative, the Bloomberg Foundation’s most recent public health initiative. Mayor Bloomberg has pledged $125 million for five years to fund road safety interventions in 10 target countries around the globe. ASIRT serves as the only non-governmental organization among the Bloomberg partners, with the goal of strengthening NGO capacity in target countries through grassroots programs. ASIRT is currently working on programs in Egypt, Kenya and Turkey.

On March 2, 2010, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously passed a historic resolution (A/64/L.44/Rev.1) declaring 2011-2020 to be the Decade of Action for Road Safety. The Decade of Action will serve as an excellent framework in which all stakeholders – government agencies, educational institutions, non-governmental organizations, corporations, and more – can work together to improve road safety both locally and globally. The Decade of Action will be officially launched on May 11, 2011.
