U.S. CONGRESS

ASIRT serves to make the U.S. Congress more aware of road safety as a global issue. Congress supports State Department efforts to better inform American travelers of the risks of road travel abroad. Congress also endorses the State Department’s collection of road crash fatality data involving Americans abroad and encourages U.S. embassies to inform American travelers of risks of road travel abroad.

ASIRT advocates that Congress mandate U.S. agencies with expertise in road safety and injury treatment (CDC, USAID, DOT and NHTSA and FHWA in DOT) to provide greater road safety and crash prevention assistance to the industrializing world.

Congressional Caucus on Global Road Safety

ASIRT was instrumental in the creation of the bi-partisan Congressional Caucus on Global Road Safety, which serves to raise the profile of the issue of global road safety in the United States and abroad, in the spring of 2004. As part of its efforts, the caucus has held educational briefings for members of Congress on the social and economic impact of road crashes worldwide, has had an ongoing correspondence with other governments encouraging greater involvement with road safety, supported the collection of data of deaths of U.S. citizens abroad, and more. ASIRT has worked in consultation with the caucus to pass several concurrent resolutions by the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate. Most recently, in September 2009, the House of Representatives unanimously approved House Concurrent Resolution 74, which aims “to support the goals and ideals of a Decade of Action for Road Safety with a global target to reduce by 50 percent the predicted increase in global road deaths between 2010 and 2020.”

Resolutions include:

House Concurrent Resolution 87: Legislation supporting the goals and ideals of a World Day of Remembrance for road crash victims and their families (see text)
Senate Concurrent Resolution 39: Legislation supporting the goals and ideals of a World Day of Remembrance for road crash victims and their families (see text)
House Concurrent Resolution 74: Legislation supporting the goals and ideals of a Decade of Action for Road Safety (see text)
