U.S. DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

ASIRT works extensively with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in order to increase government involvment in the issue of global road safety. ASIRT cooperates with the Office of International Policy and Harmonization in NHTSA to offer traffic safety information and materials to countries upon request.

NHTSA’s proven road safety track record is a model for countries that want to create a governmental traffic safety agency. The organization therefore invites representatives from interested countries to visit NHTSA in Washington to offer information, training and an understanding of how NHTSA works as a governmental agency.

NHTSA has also been instrumental in aiding ASIRT with its road safety initiatives at home and abroad. They have assisted ASIRT in finding Mary Russell, an appropriate expert to train Rotary International members in Turkey on Safe Communities, a highly acclaimed worldwide road safety initiative. Ms. Russell traveled to Turkey on behalf of ASIRT and the U.S. Embassy in Ankara. Additionally, NHTSA provides speakers for ASIRT’s traffic safety workshops.
